Parasites, Influences and Tranformations /Parasitic Electronic Seance

(audio and video installation, 1998-2000)

Collaborative work Peter Hagdahl/ CM von Hausswolff

The work ³Parasites, Influences and Transformations /Parasitic Electronic Seance² is a system which is reacting on its surroundings. A wide range of sensors (sound, light, movement, cameras, televisions and radios etc.) is detecting various site-specific inputs. The processing (both digitally and analog) of these inputs generates an output of sounds and visions (video projections) in the space. This piece was first showed in Nuit Blanche (Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris),curated by Hans-Ulrich Obrist and Laurent Bosse and then in Stretch (Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm), Galerija Skuc (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and in Sound Art at ICC in Tokyo.. Photographs shows installation views from Paris, Stockholm and Tokyo.

Parasites, influences and tranformations

Nervousness. Allergy. Dependence. A hypersensitive environment transforms the image to a reactive system which parasites on it¹s surroundings, circumstances, observer. The image behaves like a instable network, a mutating virus, a overloaded nervous system. An image which literally is dependent and has lost it¹s sovereign inaccesibility. Sensor, computer, projector are a system which reacts, records and represents a situation(changes in the environment, the observers activity, information from Internet, communication with other art works, feeedback on the systems own transformations). The images are narrations, dreams, hallucinations, events which ramifies, disseminate and transforms.

Parasitic Electronic Seance IV

Carl made his thing clear when he stuck his finger into the dead body, jerked it around a bit, removed it and sucked on it. - This is one way to tap into the unknown, he said, That's what you want, isn't it? Fifteen years ago his dreams disappeared. Everything went black and stayed black. The only thing he could do at the moment was to use physical contact and electricity. - I know there's something out there. Why do I have to prove it to you? Why not? He now used the wires that was attached to his ears, plugged them into the main electricity circuits and got loaded. This was a technique he had learned on a holiday in Iceland. Was there any results? Why did he keep on doing these experiments; experiments that looked like hermetically ended pieces. The answer sounded promising: - Even the most perfected world continues to draw pictures of unstable matters, even the finest feather produces a variation of frequences unlistenable to 95 % of mankind. Carl's finger plunged deeper into the body. Deeper and deeper ...

Under Influence (installation, 1998) was an installation produced for the exhibition ³Archipelago²,
Stockholm 1998. On a large surface of glass (8 x 3 meters) was five computergenerated
images/ flows projected, each image/flow had its own source, depending on and reacting on different
parameters (the sunlight, the movement of the viewers , information browsed from Internet, sound etc).
The work was a system behaving like an unpredictable organism.
The created output was in transformation

Seeing you in my dreams (sensorial detection, transformation)
(installation , Andréhn-Schiptjenko, 1999) The work ³Seeing you in my dreams
(sensorial detection, transformation)² is a reactive image system projected at the wall of the gallery.
A hypersensitive environment transforms the images depending on their surroundings.
Circumstances of all sorts, including the observers, affect the system and thus the speed and pattern
according to which it responds and develops. The image behaves like a instable network, a mutating
virus or an overloaded nervous system. The image is very literally dependent and has lost it's sovereign
inaccessibility. The sensor, computer and projector form a system which reacts, records and
represents a situation. This situation can be changes in the environment, the observers' activity,
communication with other art works or feedback on the system's own transformations.
The resulting images are narrations, dreams, hallucinations, events which ramify, disseminate and transform.
