The Artist space comes then to hold one of the most important of places in the artistic activity.

The translation devices of the computer, paint, the hammer, etc., are ways of exploring and reassessing the systems which are locked in place before us. The artist by interacting with these mediums explores the spaces of a system and confronts the meanings housed within them. The computer as the translation device at its most readily apparent (which includes every aspect of it from the microchip to the software) confronts the contemporary art practitioner with the project of art afresh. The reevaluation of systems and the translation of the experiences of a system to renew and revitalize our reading. Yet it lies not only with the availability of the machinery of the artist space that the (re)translation occurs nor can it be said to be its most important (although without the material and their meanings artistic production would be sorely limited).

Between each artist themselves and other artists systems are in place and operating. Therefore the space which is put in place where the contemporary art practitioner may interact with other artists becomes a place where translation and the reevaluation of ideas and languages can occur. The set of concerns which an individual artist has (this is often called the individual artists "artistic project") is confronted in the artist space with different artistic projects than thier own and, so, brings out the function in the artistic scheme of reevaluation of systems and the translations which occur between them. Because of this, the finished product and the artistic endeavor can be consistently and continually evaluated to work through the set of concerns motivating, both, the art project and art object. The artist space, then, is not only about the production of the art object by the contemporary art practitioner, but lies, in a very fundamental way, with the functioning of art itself. What art is, how we can define art at the centuries end, then, is to be found in the artists space, the meeting place of artists and their activities. In this space, the artists space, the activation of translations is called to the forefront, and the languages the art object are to embody are to be defined.
