Artistic endeavor in the 20th century has struggled long and hard with these two differing views of the world. Modernism accepted most of the tenets of the Russsellian view. For instance, Abstract Expressionism was seeking out a method of artistic language to bridge the gap between experience and the real, while Minimalism consistently reduced the artists repertory of forms to hopefully find a basic set of objects to build from to develop the totally clear art language. The concern in the Modernist project is in collapsing, or working out, the distance between our languages and the world itself (the Real). Postmodernism sided with the Turing endeavor. Each state or space of the world was a set of languages which we could reread to tell us something about the pathways of a space. the Revelation of art is through the rereading of the pathways of any system by translation applied where we least expect it (translation of points in the system to give new meanings or attaching differing translation devices to the system to redirect the reading to another system) or through the translation, and so redefinition, of the system internally (using its own rules to realign its hierarchy). |
